The Spirit is a Seal

Be Encouraged!

There are few things more comforting than knowing you’re secure—especially in your relationship with God. The Holy Spirit doesn’t just visit the believer; He seals us. He is the mark that we belong to God now and forever.

Ephesians 1:13 (NLT)
And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.”

Reflection
In the ancient world, a seal represented ownership, authority, and protection. Kings sealed letters with their signet rings to signify authenticity. Farmers and merchants sealed property to mark what was theirs. When Paul says the Holy Spirit is our seal, he’s saying something powerful: we are marked as God’s own.

This seal isn’t symbolic—it’s spiritual. When you placed your faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit came to dwell in you. Not temporarily, not conditionally—but as a permanent guarantee. Ephesians 1:14 says the Spirit is the down payment on our inheritance. In other words, God gave us His Spirit as a sure sign that He will finish what He started.

This changes the way we see ourselves. You are not unclaimed. You are not in spiritual limbo. You are sealed. That seal doesn’t erase your need for growth or sanctification, but it does silence the lie that your standing with God is uncertain.

The Spirit’s seal is also a daily reminder that you are not your own. You were bought with a price and marked by His Spirit. That truth leads not to pride but to worship. You are God’s—chosen, loved, kept.

Application
Whenever you feel unsure of where you stand with God, remember His seal. Thank Him for the Spirit who marks you as His. Let that assurance lead you to greater confidence, not in yourself, but in His faithfulness. Live today as someone fully claimed and fully secure in Christ.

References

Ephesians 1:14 (NLT)
“The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people.”

2 Corinthians 1:22 (NLT)
“And he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.”

Prayer
Father, thank You for sealing me with Your Spirit. I am Yours—not because of my works, but because of Your grace. When I doubt, remind me that Your mark is on me. When I feel distant, help me rest in the truth that You’ve promised to finish what You began. Holy Spirit, continue to confirm and strengthen that assurance in my heart. Amen.

Hi Mr. Bergeron. I just wanted to let you know how much I’ve enjoyed your writings and I have been sharing them with my sister, my son and his girlfriend and my husband. I know we’ve never met but I just wanted you to know that your words are insightful, inspiring and helpful. They are particularly comforting during this difficult time where so much of what is going on in so many churches just hasn’t been compatible to my own faith. At least, that’s been my impression. Thank you for helping us on our journey. Dawn D. DeLaughter Dryden
