Church Goals

In our last session, we explored the importance of cultivating a spirit of service within the church. Today, we’ll shift our focus to the theme of encouragement. Encouragement is a powerful tool in the life of the church, as it helps to build up the body of Christ, strengthens our faith, and fosters a sense of unity and love among believers.

Session Objective: The goal of this session is to inspire the church to become a community where encouragement is a natural and consistent practice. We will explore the biblical foundation for encouragement, discuss its importance in the life of the church, and consider practical ways to develop a culture of encouragement within our congregation.

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 10:24-25 (BSB) “And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Key Themes:

  1. The Biblical Foundation of Encouragement:
    • Encouragement as a Command: Discuss how the New Testament repeatedly commands believers to encourage one another. Highlight the role of encouragement in helping believers persevere in faith and grow in love and good deeds.
    • Examples of Encouragement in the Bible: Reflect on biblical examples of encouragement, such as Barnabas, known as the “Son of Encouragement,” and how his ministry impacted the early church.
    • The Role of the Holy Spirit: Explore how the Holy Spirit works in and through believers to provide encouragement, comfort, and strength, enabling us to build each other up in the faith.
  2. The Importance of Encouragement in the Church:
    • Strengthening Faith: Discuss how encouragement helps strengthen our faith, especially in times of trial or doubt. Reflect on how a word of encouragement can renew hope and restore confidence in God’s promises.
    • Fostering Unity: Explore how encouragement fosters unity within the church, helping to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and promote a spirit of love and cooperation.
    • Promoting Spiritual Growth: Reflect on the role of encouragement in promoting spiritual growth, challenging one another to pursue holiness, and inspiring each other to live out our faith in practical ways.
  3. Encouraging with Words and Actions:
    • The Power of Words: Discuss the impact that our words can have, either to build up or tear down. Reflect on passages like Proverbs 18:21, which reminds us that “death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
    • Encouraging through Actions: Explore how encouragement can be expressed through actions, such as acts of kindness, support during difficult times, or simply being present for someone in need.
    • Balancing Truth and Love: Reflect on the importance of balancing truth and love in our encouragement, speaking honestly and lovingly in a way that builds up rather than tears down.
  4. Cultivating a Culture of Encouragement:
    • Teaching on Encouragement: Discuss the need for regular teaching on the importance of encouragement, helping the congregation understand its biblical foundation and practical application.
    • Modeling Encouragement: Explore the role of church leaders and mature believers in modeling encouragement, setting an example for others to follow.
    • Creating Opportunities for Encouragement: Reflect on practical ways to create opportunities for encouragement within the church, whether through small groups, prayer partners, or intentional acts of kindness.
  5. Overcoming Barriers to Encouragement:
    • Negative Attitudes: Address the challenge of negative attitudes or critical spirits that can hinder encouragement, and discuss how to cultivate a positive, grace-filled perspective.
    • Fear of Vulnerability: Reflect on the fear of vulnerability that can prevent people from giving or receiving encouragement, and explore ways to create a safe and supportive environment where encouragement can flourish.
    • Busyness: Discuss the challenge of busyness, which can prevent us from taking the time to encourage others, and consider practical ways to prioritize encouragement in our daily lives.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Understanding Encouragement:
    • How does the Bible’s teaching on encouragement challenge your current approach to encouraging others?
    • In what ways have you experienced the impact of encouragement in your own life?
  2. Practical Encouragement:
    • What are some practical ways you can encourage others within our church community?
    • How can we use our words to build up and strengthen one another in faith?
  3. Overcoming Challenges:
    • What are some common barriers that prevent people from encouraging others, and how can we overcome these barriers?
    • How can we address the issue of fear or vulnerability that often prevents people from giving or receiving encouragement?
  4. Building a Culture of Encouragement:
    • How can we create a culture of encouragement within our church, where everyone feels supported and uplifted?
    • What role do church leaders and mature believers play in modeling and promoting encouragement?
  5. Evaluating the Impact:
    • How can we evaluate the effectiveness of our efforts to cultivate a culture of encouragement within the church?
    • What are some signs that our church is growing in its commitment to encouragement, and how can we celebrate and build on this growth?

Application:

  1. Personal Reflection on Encouragement:
    • Take time this week to reflect on your own practice of encouragement. Consider whether there are specific people in your life who need encouragement and how you can reach out to them.
  2. Commit to Encouraging Others:
    • Make a commitment to intentionally encourage at least one person each day this week. Whether through a kind word, a note, or a thoughtful action, seek to build up others in love.
  3. Pray for a Heart of Encouragement:
    • Spend time in prayer, asking God to cultivate a heart of encouragement within you and within our church. Pray for the wisdom to speak words of life and the courage to offer support and comfort to those in need.
  4. Join an Encouragement Group:
    • If available, consider joining or forming a small group focused on mutual encouragement. This could be a prayer group, a Bible study, or simply a group of friends committed to building each other up in faith.

Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of encouragement. Help us to be a church that reflects Your love through our words and actions, building one another up in faith and unity. May we be quick to offer encouragement to those in need and always seek to strengthen the body of Christ. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Next Session: In our next session, we will focus on the theme of forgiveness, considering how love enables us to forgive one another and live in harmony. We will explore the biblical call to forgive as we have been forgiven and discuss practical ways to cultivate a forgiving heart.
