• Faith in the Son of God

Faith in the Son of God

The heart of the Christian life is believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. From this faith flows love for God, love for His children, and the power to overcome the world.

    Scripture
“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” — 1 John 5:1–5 (NLT)

    Reflection
Faith in Jesus is not just mental agreement—it is the doorway into God’s family. Believing in Him makes us His children, and love for the Father naturally extends to His other children. John links love and obedience closely: to love God is to obey His commands. Yet far from being heavy, God’s commands are life-giving, because they flow from His love and are empowered by His Spirit.

John also reminds us that faith is the key to victory. The world with its temptations, doubts, and opposition may seem overwhelming, but those who trust in Christ overcome it. This victory is not won by our strength but through believing in the Son of God. As Jesus said, “Take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NLT).

    Application
Hold fast to your confession of faith: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Let this faith shape your love for others and your obedience to God’s Word. When the world feels heavy, remember that victory is already yours through Christ. Walk in that confidence today.

    References
“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” — 1 John 5:4 (NIV)

    Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that by believing in You I have been made a child of God. Strengthen my love for the Father and for my brothers and sisters in Christ. Help me to walk in obedience, not as a burden but as a joy. Remind me that in You I already have victory over the world. Amen.

  • Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

Fear often grips our hearts when we forget who God is and what He has done for us. But John reminds us that God’s love, made perfect in Christ, drives out fear and gives us confidence in His presence.

    Scripture
“And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love. We love each other because he loved us first.” — 1 John 4:17–19 (NLT)

    Reflection
The world’s kind of love is fragile, often mixed with fear of loss or rejection. But God’s love is different—it is steady, perfect, and rooted in Christ’s finished work. This love gives believers confidence, not dread, when they think of standing before God.

Fear of punishment belongs to those who are outside of Christ. But for God’s children, judgment has already been dealt with at the cross. Jesus bore the penalty, so we can live in freedom, not fear. As we abide in God, our love matures and reflects His nature more and more.

This freedom from fear doesn’t make us careless—it fuels deeper love. When we know how completely God loves us, we are freed to love others without hesitation. His perfect love flows through us, replacing fear with boldness and self-giving compassion.

    Application
Ask yourself: Am I living out of fear or out of love? Bring your fears before God and let His perfect love remind you of your secure standing in Christ. Then, take a step of love toward someone today—not out of obligation, but as an overflow of the love you’ve received.

    References
“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1 (NLT)

    Prayer
Father, thank You that Your perfect love drives out my fear. Help me to rest in the confidence that Christ has already borne my punishment. Teach me to live each day not in fear, but in love—loving others freely because You have loved me first. Amen.

  • Session 23: Living Out the Goodness of God

We’ve finally arrived at our last session of our Church Goals series. Last week, we discussed the importance of kindness and how it reflects Christ’s love in our interactions with others. Today, we will focus on the theme of goodness—understanding what it means to live out the goodness of God in our daily lives and how we can become vessels of His goodness to those around us.

Session Objective: The objective of this session is to explore the biblical concept of goodness, understand its role in the life of a believer, and learn practical ways to embody God’s goodness in our actions and decisions.

Scripture Reading: Galatians 6:9-10 (BSB) “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to the family of faith.”

    Key Themes:

    1. Understanding the Goodness of God:
      • God as the Source of All Goodness: Reflect on Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” Discuss how all goodness originates from God and how His goodness is evident in His creation, provision, and grace.
      • Goodness as a Fruit of the Spirit: Explore Galatians 5:22-23, where goodness is listed as a fruit of the Spirit. Discuss how goodness, like kindness, is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives, leading us to act in ways that are morally right and beneficial to others.
      • The Moral Aspect of Goodness: Consider Micah 6:8, which says, “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” Discuss the moral dimension of goodness, emphasizing justice, mercy, and humility.
    2. Living Out Goodness in Our Daily Lives:
      • Goodness in Our Actions: Reflect on how our actions can reflect God’s goodness, using James 2:14-17, which emphasizes that faith without works is dead. Discuss how true goodness is expressed through actions that benefit others, such as helping those in need or standing up for what is right.
      • Goodness in Our Decisions: Explore the importance of making decisions that reflect God’s goodness. Consider Philippians 4:8, which encourages us to focus on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Discuss how these qualities can guide our decision-making.
      • Goodness in Our Relationships: Reflect on Romans 12:21, which says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Discuss how we can overcome negative influences by responding with goodness, especially in our relationships.
    3. Practical Steps to Embody God’s Goodness:
      • Choosing Goodness Daily: Reflect on the importance of daily choices in living out goodness. Consider Deuteronomy 30:19-20, where God sets before us life and death, blessings and curses, and calls us to choose life. Discuss how choosing goodness daily aligns with choosing life and blessing.
      • Serving Others with Goodness: Explore how serving others is a practical way to embody God’s goodness. Reflect on Matthew 25:35-40, where Jesus describes the righteous as those who fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, and welcomed strangers. Discuss how service is a tangible expression of goodness.
      • Encouraging Others in Goodness: Consider Hebrews 10:24, which says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” Discuss the importance of encouraging others in their pursuit of goodness and how we can support one another in doing good.
    4. Overcoming Challenges in Pursuing Goodness:
      • Dealing with Weariness in Doing Good: Reflect on Galatians 6:9, which acknowledges the weariness that can come from persistent efforts to do good. Discuss strategies for overcoming fatigue and maintaining the motivation to do good, such as prayer, community support, and focusing on the eternal rewards.
      • Resisting Temptations to Compromise: Explore the challenges of staying committed to goodness in a world where it’s often easier to compromise. Reflect on 1 Peter 2:12, which encourages believers to live good lives among non-believers, so that they may see our good deeds and glorify God.
      • Trusting God’s Timing: Consider Ecclesiastes 3:11, which says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Discuss how trusting in God’s timing helps us remain steadfast in our pursuit of goodness, even when we don’t see immediate results.
    5. The Impact of Living Out Goodness:
      • Building a Testimony of Goodness: Reflect on how consistent goodness builds a testimony that glorifies God, using Matthew 5:16, which says, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Discuss how our lives can be a testimony to God’s goodness.
      • Transforming Lives Through Goodness: Explore how acts of goodness can transform lives, both our own and others’. Consider how goodness can be a catalyst for change in families, communities, and even society at large.
      • The Eternal Rewards of Goodness: Reflect on the eternal perspective of doing good, using Matthew 25:21, where Jesus says, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Discuss the joy and reward that come from living a life of goodness.
