There are days when the weight of injustice, sorrow, or personal hardship feels heavy enough to crush the spirit. In those moments, we long for safety—not just relief, but refuge. David’s words in this psalm remind us that God is not distant from the broken or indifferent to the afflicted. He is a stronghold, a place of security for those who feel pressed on every side. These verses invite us to see Him not merely as powerful, but as personally near to those who seek Him.
“The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.” (Psalm 9:9–10, BSB)
Devotional Thought
David describes the Lord as a refuge and a stronghold—images of protection in a dangerous world. A refuge is not a denial of danger; it is a shelter within it. The oppressed are not told to ignore their suffering. Instead, they are invited to run somewhere—to Someone. God Himself becomes the safe place.
There is a beautiful progression here: “Those who know Your name trust in You.” To know His name is to know His character—His mercy, His righteousness, His covenant love. Trust is not blind; it grows from relationship. As we learn who God is through His Word and through His faithfulness in our own lives, confidence begins to take root. We trust Him not because life is easy, but because He has proven Himself trustworthy.
And then comes the promise: “You… have not forsaken those who seek You.” In Christ, this assurance becomes even more radiant. Jesus entered into oppression, bearing injustice and suffering on the cross. He cried out, experiencing abandonment in our place, so that we would never be truly forsaken. Because of Him, we can run boldly to God as our refuge. The stronghold is not closed. The door is open.
In times of trouble, our instinct may be to withdraw or to rely solely on our own strength. But the psalm calls us outward—to seek Him. The stronghold is not found in self-protection, but in God’s presence. And in that refuge, we discover a peace that trouble cannot steal.
Application
When you feel overwhelmed or wronged, resist the urge to isolate. Run to the Lord intentionally—through prayer, Scripture, and honest worship. Remind yourself of His name and His character. He has not forsaken you, and He never will.
