David does not shy away from naming evil for what it is. As he closes this psalm, the contrast between the wicked and the righteous becomes clearer. But the heart of his prayer isn’t merely for judgment—it’s for preservation, for joy, and for the flourishing of those who take refuge in the Lord. He knows what it is to be opposed by deceitful people, and yet he lifts his eyes higher, toward the God who defends the upright and surrounds them with steadfast love.
“For not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with malice. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongue they speak deceit. Declare them guilty, O God; let them fall by their own devices. Drive them out for their many transgressions, for they have rebelled against You. But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them ever shout for joy. May You shelter them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You. For surely You, O LORD, bless the righteous; You surround them with favor like a shield.” (Psalm 5:9–12, BSB)
David paints a devastating picture of the wicked. Their words are twisted, their motives corrupt, and their influence destructive—like an open grave that consumes everything near it. He pleads for justice, not out of vengeance, but because such rebellion is ultimately directed against God Himself. It’s a cry for God to act righteously, to uphold His holiness.
But in the same breath, David turns toward the righteous—not the sinless, but those who take refuge in God. These are the ones who rejoice, not in themselves, but in the shelter of the Lord. “Let them ever shout for joy,” he says. Why? Because they are covered. God doesn’t just bless them; He surrounds them with favor—like a shield that cannot be breached.
This is the assurance every believer can carry. In Christ, we are sheltered from wrath, shielded by mercy, and blessed with the favor of God that nothing can revoke. The deceit and schemes of the world may swirl around us, but they cannot touch what is kept by the Lord.
Application
Take refuge in the Lord daily. When you’re surrounded by lies or opposition, choose joy—not because the trouble disappears, but because God’s favor surrounds you like a shield. Walk in that confidence.
