Food For The Heart - Finding Christ in the Psalms

Our world is often shrouded in fear and uncertainty, leading to the common question, “Who will show us any good?” This cry resonates through the ages, embodying a longing, restlessness, and an enduring desire for something meaningful. David, too, hears this cry, but instead of succumbing to despair, he points to the sole answer that can truly satisfy the soul.

“Many ask, ‘Who can show us the good?’ Lift up the light of Your face upon us, O LORD.” (Psalm 4:6, BSB)

This verse captures the weariness of those searching for meaning in a broken world. It’s the voice of the many—those watching the rise and fall of leaders, the fading of riches, and the inconsistency of human goodness. Their question isn’t just about prosperity; it’s about hope. Can anything truly good be found?

David doesn’t try to manufacture a human answer. He prays. And his prayer is striking in its simplicity: “Lift up the light of Your face upon us, O LORD.” This is an echo of the priestly blessing from Numbers 6—an appeal for God’s favor, presence, and peace. In essence, David is saying: The answer to our longing isn’t found in better circumstances; it’s found in seeing Your face, Lord. Your light is the good we crave.

This finds its deepest fulfillment in Christ, the Light of the world. In Him, God’s face is fully revealed—not distant or harsh, but full of grace and truth. When we look to Jesus, we see the goodness of God made tangible. And in that light, even the darkest nights are pierced with hope.

Application
When you’re tempted to despair or question where the good is, turn your gaze upward. Ask the Lord to lift the light of His face upon you. Let His presence become your definition of goodness.
