We’ve finally arrived at our last session of our Church Goals series. Last week, we discussed the importance of kindness and how it reflects Christ’s love in our interactions with others. Today, we will focus on the theme of goodness—understanding what it means to live out the goodness of God in our daily lives and how we can become vessels of His goodness to those around us.
Session Objective: The objective of this session is to explore the biblical concept of goodness, understand its role in the life of a believer, and learn practical ways to embody God’s goodness in our actions and decisions.
Scripture Reading: Galatians 6:9-10 (BSB) “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to the family of faith.”
Key Themes:
- Understanding the Goodness of God:
- God as the Source of All Goodness: Reflect on Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” Discuss how all goodness originates from God and how His goodness is evident in His creation, provision, and grace.
- Goodness as a Fruit of the Spirit: Explore Galatians 5:22-23, where goodness is listed as a fruit of the Spirit. Discuss how goodness, like kindness, is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives, leading us to act in ways that are morally right and beneficial to others.
- The Moral Aspect of Goodness: Consider Micah 6:8, which says, “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” Discuss the moral dimension of goodness, emphasizing justice, mercy, and humility.
- Living Out Goodness in Our Daily Lives:
- Goodness in Our Actions: Reflect on how our actions can reflect God’s goodness, using James 2:14-17, which emphasizes that faith without works is dead. Discuss how true goodness is expressed through actions that benefit others, such as helping those in need or standing up for what is right.
- Goodness in Our Decisions: Explore the importance of making decisions that reflect God’s goodness. Consider Philippians 4:8, which encourages us to focus on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Discuss how these qualities can guide our decision-making.
- Goodness in Our Relationships: Reflect on Romans 12:21, which says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Discuss how we can overcome negative influences by responding with goodness, especially in our relationships.
- Practical Steps to Embody God’s Goodness:
- Choosing Goodness Daily: Reflect on the importance of daily choices in living out goodness. Consider Deuteronomy 30:19-20, where God sets before us life and death, blessings and curses, and calls us to choose life. Discuss how choosing goodness daily aligns with choosing life and blessing.
- Serving Others with Goodness: Explore how serving others is a practical way to embody God’s goodness. Reflect on Matthew 25:35-40, where Jesus describes the righteous as those who fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, and welcomed strangers. Discuss how service is a tangible expression of goodness.
- Encouraging Others in Goodness: Consider Hebrews 10:24, which says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” Discuss the importance of encouraging others in their pursuit of goodness and how we can support one another in doing good.
- Overcoming Challenges in Pursuing Goodness:
- Dealing with Weariness in Doing Good: Reflect on Galatians 6:9, which acknowledges the weariness that can come from persistent efforts to do good. Discuss strategies for overcoming fatigue and maintaining the motivation to do good, such as prayer, community support, and focusing on the eternal rewards.
- Resisting Temptations to Compromise: Explore the challenges of staying committed to goodness in a world where it’s often easier to compromise. Reflect on 1 Peter 2:12, which encourages believers to live good lives among non-believers, so that they may see our good deeds and glorify God.
- Trusting God’s Timing: Consider Ecclesiastes 3:11, which says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Discuss how trusting in God’s timing helps us remain steadfast in our pursuit of goodness, even when we don’t see immediate results.
- The Impact of Living Out Goodness:
- Building a Testimony of Goodness: Reflect on how consistent goodness builds a testimony that glorifies God, using Matthew 5:16, which says, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Discuss how our lives can be a testimony to God’s goodness.
- Transforming Lives Through Goodness: Explore how acts of goodness can transform lives, both our own and others’. Consider how goodness can be a catalyst for change in families, communities, and even society at large.
- The Eternal Rewards of Goodness: Reflect on the eternal perspective of doing good, using Matthew 25:21, where Jesus says, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Discuss the joy and reward that come from living a life of goodness.
