Church Goals

Previously discussed the importance of patience in our relationship with God. Today, we will focus on the theme of kindness—how we can cultivate a heart of compassion and reflect Christ’s kindness in our daily interactions with others. Kindness is a powerful expression of God’s love and a vital aspect of Christian character.

Session Objective: The objective of this session is to understand the significance of kindness in the Christian life, recognize the opportunities we have to show kindness, and learn how to actively cultivate a kind and compassionate heart.

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:32 (BSB) “Be kind and tender-hearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Key Themes:

  1. The Importance of Kindness:
    • Kindness as a Reflection of God’s Love: Reflect on Titus 3:4-5, which speaks of the kindness and love of God our Savior. Discuss how our kindness to others reflects the love and kindness we have received from God.
    • Kindness as a Fruit of the Spirit: Explore Galatians 5:22-23, where kindness is listed as a fruit of the Spirit. Discuss how kindness is a natural outflow of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives.
    • Kindness in Action: Consider 1 Corinthians 13:4, which says, “Love is patient, love is kind.” Discuss how kindness is an essential expression of love in our relationships.
  2. Opportunities to Show Kindness:
    • Everyday Acts of Kindness: Reflect on how small, everyday acts of kindness can make a big difference. Discuss practical examples, such as offering a smile, holding a door open, or helping someone in need.
    • Kindness in Challenging Situations: Explore the challenge of showing kindness in difficult situations or to difficult people. Reflect on Romans 12:20, which encourages us to “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.”
    • Kindness in Words: Consider the power of kind words, using Proverbs 16:24, which says, “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Discuss how our words can either build up or tear down others.
  3. Cultivating a Heart of Kindness:
    • Empathy and Compassion: Reflect on Colossians 3:12, which calls us to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” Discuss the role of empathy and compassion in cultivating kindness.
    • Forgiveness and Kindness: Explore the connection between forgiveness and kindness, using Ephesians 4:32. Discuss how forgiving others is an essential aspect of showing kindness.
    • Intentional Acts of Kindness: Consider the importance of being intentional about showing kindness. Reflect on Matthew 7:12, the Golden Rule, which says, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.”
  4. Practical Steps to Show Kindness:
    • Practice Kindness Daily: Discuss practical ways to incorporate acts of kindness into your daily routine, such as volunteering, helping a neighbor, or encouraging someone.
    • Be Kind to Yourself: Explore the importance of being kind to yourself, using Mark 12:31, which says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Discuss how self-compassion enables us to show kindness to others.
    • Teach Kindness to Others: Consider how you can model and teach kindness to others, especially children and those you mentor. Reflect on 1 Timothy 4:12, which encourages us to set an example in our conduct.
  5. The Impact of Kindness:
    • Transforming Relationships: Reflect on how kindness can transform relationships, using Proverbs 15:1, which says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Discuss how kindness can diffuse conflict and build stronger connections.
    • Kindness as a Witness: Explore how kindness can be a powerful witness to others about the love of Christ. Reflect on Matthew 5:16, which encourages us to “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
    • The Joy of Giving: Consider how showing kindness brings joy to both the giver and the receiver, using Acts 20:35, which says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
